Polisi Tertarik Rekrut Cracker Kelas Dunia

Auckland - Cracker yang satu ini, meski masih relatif belia sudah mampu mengorganisir serangan cyber berskala global. Dia pun lepas dari jeratan hukum karena ditakutkan, hukuman penjara malah akan membuat keahliannya yang langka dalam mengutak-atik internet hilang.

Cracker bernama Owen Thor Walker (18 tahun) itu sebenarnya bersalah soal keterlibatannya dalam jaringan kejahatan cyber internasional. Namun pengadilan Selandia Baru memutuskan membebaskannya.

Menurut hakim yang menangani perkara ini, Judith Potter, motivasi utama Owen bukanlah ingin berbuat kriminal, namun untuk menunjukkan keahliannya saja. Sang hakim pun mengakui kehebatannya dan ia dinyatakan punya potensi hebat di masa depan jika diarahkan dengan baik.

Pengadilan rupanya tahu bahwa Owen telah menerima tawaran kerja dari perusahaan luar negeri. Bahkan kepolisian Selandia Baru juga berniat memanfaatkan keahliannya soal mengoprek internet.

Owen sendiri menolak berkomentar atas kebebasannya ini. Menurut polisi, Owen yang nama online-nya 'Akill' ini membantu jaringan penjahat cyber menyebarkan virus ataupun membobol identitas pengakses internet di berbagai belahan dunia.

Seperti dikutip hidupbebas dari NZHerald, Selasa (15/7/2008), investigasi atas kasus ini melibatkan banyak pihak termasuk kepolisian Amerika Serikat dan Belanda. Sementara kerugian yang ditimbulkan mencapai jutaan dollar.
